Yellowstone

We went to Yellowstone for an Anderson family reunion. We had a great time! Here are some of the highlights:

We flew in late Friday night and Aunt Mary picked us up and let us crash at her place for the evening. Emma didn't sleep a wink on the flight and so she got a half a night's sleep. It was a little piece of awesome. In reality she did totally wonderful given the circumstances. She loved to see Mary's cat, Gracie, in the morning. Gracie, on the other hand, wasn't not as excited to see Emma and made the wise decision to hide. The funny thing was that Emma thought a cat would come up to you to be petted like a dog would. She was grossly mistaken.

We got to Island Park, ID where our cabin was and reveled in its awesomeness. Everyone had their own bedroom and there were 3 bathrooms and 2 sets of washers and driers and 3 different floors and a nicely stocked kitchen. There are some families out there that can cram tens of people in one room and be happy with one another after a week. I don't know that ours is that family. We value personal space. I think it is the Norwegian in us. It certainly isn't the Tongan. So having plenty of space lent itself to a very nice time with everyone.

We went to see Johnny Sack Cabin and to watch the fish in the river. These fish just hang out waiting for food. And seeing as there is plenty of people willing to drop pellets down to them, they are quite large. The seagulls also fare well.

On the way home we saw a moose and its baby. The mom had the intelligence to run away before we could get a picture. The baby hung around.
On Monday we went into Yellowstone and saw old faithful. It was pretty cool. I think I was the most excited to see Old Faithful going into the trip. It was a unique thing but it wasn't the coolest thing in Yellowstone, according to my opinion. On the way we saw some elk along the way.
We also saw some bison cheeks as well.
Most impressively is a chipmunk.
Back to Old Faithful.

We also saw the Lodge and that was pretty cool - beautiful woodwork. The we went to the Grand Prismatic Springs and that was one of my top favorites. They were absolutely gorgeous and our pictures don't do justice. Toward the end we saw how we could get an over head picture but Emma was losing it so we had to take off.

To knock Emma out we drove around Yellowstone for a while and it was beautiful! We got to enjoy the time with my dad and then we made our way to a cowboy cookout. Some of the kids rode horses and the rest of us went via a wagon pulled by a tractor. The alternative was a horse drawn wagon and I was grateful not to be on the horse drawn wagon. I have never had good luck behind a horse.

The next day we went to Norris Geyser basin.

We tried to knock Emma out with another scenic drive but she has some great stamina. So instead of being responsible and taking her home, we went to the Grizzly and Wolf Museum. I wanted to make sure we could see a bear before we left. I wanted it to be in the wild but I had to make sure I would get one in.

The coolest part was that we didn't get to see was that Emily's kids got to go in the bear area and hide food and then watch to see if the bears could find it. Apparently the bears are quite skillful at finding food. Emma was in hyperactive mode because of the lack of nap so we took her home to feed and take her to the pillow and blanket show.

The next day we went to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. We saw the upper and lower falls. The lower falls are larger than the Niagara falls.

Then we all met up and went to dinner at a restaurant at Canyon Village. We had a great time visiting and enjoying each others company.
And then we went on an adventure of adventures. We drove through Hayden Valley just before it was getting dark. We came across a place with a spring but all around the spring and on the boardwalk were bison galore. It was a whole herd. We took some pictures and Aaron and Brian even adventured to go off the boardwalk to get closer to the really mean and dangerous animals. Aaron reported that at one point one snarled at them.

I suspect it was this guy that snarled at them. He just looks like the type. So after that we drove down the road some and along the way we would see elk or more bison. It was getting late and way past every one's bedtime. So we turn around. When we got to the previous spring/bison herd they had also decided that it was their bedtime as well. The whole herd was crossing the street and more like they were walking down the street on either side of our car. These were big suckers. And the sad fact of the matter is that our pictures didn't turn out so well because we couldn't zoom out far enough. They were that close to the car. If they were friendly or I didn't like my arm, and I had no concern for Mary's car, I could have petted them. So here are some stinky pictures as proof:

The next morning the true Aunt Mary came out to play. She has been rather squishy with Emma but it reached its peak that morning. Emma took note that Mary was putting on her makeup and wanted to participate. Aunt Mary let her play with her expensive makeup. This is something I don't think I can bring myself to do.... maybe ever.

Emma remembered Mary's makeup bag the following morning and begged to play with it. Later that day we went to Mammoth and saw some cool springs. On the way to the springs we hit a traffic jam. There was a bison walking down the street on the opposing lane of traffic. There was a police car with its lights on right behind the bison. The police man was telling cars in our lane to just drive past the bison because he wasn't in our lane of traffic. Well, the car in front of us moved on and then the bison started to run at our car head on. I was pretty sure we would need to buy Mary a new car at that point. We froze there. Then the bison moved to the passenger side of the car really, really close to the car. We were still frozen. The police man over his blow horn told us to move now that the bison wasn't in our lane. Never mind mister police man that he is a foot from our car and the last thing we want to do is tick off the thing. But we unfroze and followed orders and moved on. Scary - I tell you what!

We stopped and had lunch in Mammoth on some lawn in front of the Calvary officer's houses. Now I think they just house employees but back in the day they were for the officers of the army that were watching over the park. While we were having lunch Josh and Aaron got into a WWF wrestling match. It lasted for quite some time. Then afterwards we were relaxing when a bison walked up to some kids 3 houses down and snarled at them and another group of kids. At that point everyone just ran to the car and high tailed it out of there.

Some of my favorite memories from the trip were just sitting around in the evening visiting and Aaron and Brian inflicting pain on Josh and Josh just loving it. By inflicting pain, I mean WWF style wrestling and other boy games. Emma loved to play with cousins and family. There was one morning where she woke up and would just yell for Grandpa to come get her. Never mind Grandpa was 2 stories above her. We played games and chatted away and laughed. It was sad to say good bye to everyone. Now that we are home Emma doesn't understand that I have responsibilities. She adjusted to having someone to play with all day everyday really fast. She had requested that we call grandma and grandpa every day since we have been home and sometimes multiple times a day.

At one point Grandpa Rich taught Emma to throw stuff over the balcony on the second floor. In Grandpa's defense it started with stuffed animals. Emma loved it. It didn't take long before Emma was launching a cabbage patch kid over the balcony and squealing with delight. We had to put the kabosh on it at that point since the cabbage patch kid has some weight to it and a hard face and Emma has no common sense.

On our way back to Houston we got to spend a evening in Provo with the Russells. Emma had fun playing with Grandma and Grandpa and Bentley. We got to follow tradition and play games with them before we headed out in the morning for home.

4th of July

We had a wonderful 4th of July. We took Emma to the parade in the morning. The Woodlands isn't that big and so the parade was kinda lacking but it was fun for Emma to watch the firetrucks. We were at the end of the parade route and so the bands had pooped out by the time they got to us and weren't playing anymore. Part way through we had had our fill and started to leave. Emma wanted to turn back. I thought she wanted to go back and see the rest of the parade. I thought it was so cute that she was enjoying it that much. It turns out that she saw a piece of trash on the side walk and wanted to throw it out. I should have know. She lives for trash and garbage cans.

Next we went swimming at the Rob Flemming Pool. It has a big play structure that periodically dumps water on you in mass quantities. I refused to go near the thing. Aaron was a better sport and took Emma on it. He then shielded her from most of the water. It also has a lazy river that we floated down. I thought Emma would like it more than she did. Looking back on it, since it didn't have stairs or buttons, it makes sense that it wasn't a huge hit.

That evening we went to a friends house for a BBQ. That was the hit with Emma. We broke so many rules that it was shear joy for her. It was about 97 degrees outside so my energy and interest in enforcing anything was totally shot. I was moving at the same rate as a 3-toed sloth. So Emma had about 1/8th of a watermelon for dinner and a few bites of corn. She got to run wild through the street without having to hold either parent's hand. Our friends live on a cul-de-sac and we BBQed on the front driveway and the kids just ran amuck there. At one point Emma wandered over to the neighbors house (who was also participating in the BBQ) and went into their house. Aaron had to go fish her out. Emma also got to eat a chocolate cupcake which involved 1 part frosting and 1 part cupcake. By the time the cupcake crumbled into pieces she got 1/2 the cake and all of the frosting. Then we lost track of time and didn't leave until it was almost 9pm - 1.5 hours past her bed time and she still needed a bath since she was covered in watermelon juice. Life was good for her until the next day when it all caught up with her. Even then, I paid the price more than her.

We got a new camera lens and Aaron was testing it out. Emma caught on and wanted Aaron to take her picture and this was her pose:

Grapes and Guac - Why Not....

We had Mexican food for dinner the other night and Emma loves guacamole. And by loves I mean begs for guacamole. So after dinner we let her lick the bowl. We also gave her some grapes. She suddenly got this smile on her face, picked up a grape, and then dipped it in the guac and ate it. You could just read her mind, "If I like grapes and guacamole, I bet grapes in guacamole is delicious!" I don't think she found it as appetizing as what she had originally thought it would be.

Visit to California

We went to visit California this past week. We got to spend some quality time with family. Here are the highlights:

One morning Emma wanted to go outside and play after breakfast. So I let her out without shoes. She noticed the sprinkler system going off and went to investigate... a couple of times.

I got her up from her nap one day and Emma wasn't quite ready to get up. When she saw Grandpa Rich she wanted to go to him and she snuggled with him for a while. Both Aaron and I were jealous.

Whenever Grandpa Rich had his computer Emma snuggled right up to him. My dad was a good sport.

Emma found Aunt Mary's ugg boots one day.

Every morning Aunt Mary would eat a big bowl of oatmeal with berries on top. Emma would cozy up to Mary and beg for her breakfast even after she had already eaten breakfast. It turns out that she really just wanted the berries.
Every lunch we would go visit Nanny. We had a great time. I got to hear Nanny stories and Emma got to play with the phone, Nanny's bears, Bitsy the ceramic dog, dance to Nanny's TV and play with the electric keyboard.

For lunch we would sit around Nanny's table with Emma sitting on Nanny's walker, named Petunia. Emma did pretty good eating but on occasion Emma would rub her food all over the table. She also liked to pour water from one cup to another and more than occasionally spill some water everywhere. Nanny was a good sport about us coming and making a mess and putting up all of her breakables.

One of the stories that I enjoyed about Nanny was that after she graduated from college in physical education she went on to teach middle school. I asked her if she liked it. She said no. I asked why. She said that because she was little (both short and skinny) the kids would try to pick her up and carry her around. I was about crying I was laughing so hard.

One story I enjoyed about my mom was that she was working in the nursery at church before she had kids and she did some research as to what kids would like to do. She read about giving kids 25 pounds of dried beans and letting them pour the in cups. So she laid down a blanket and let them play with the beans. Apparently the janitors hated her for years afterwords as they kept finding beans everywhere.

A while ago I challenged Nanny to an eating contest. To put this in perspective, Nanny eats about 5 noodles and calls herself full. Nanny was boasting that she could eat a whole bowl of olive garden salad. We are talking an olive garden serving bowl, not a cereal bowl. I decided to call her on that one. So we got olive garden soup and salad to go and had an eating contest and I will say that Nanny did an impressive job. So let it be known that I won. But Nanny did bring her "A" game. She actually ate more than my mom, which isn't normal. (A word of warning: I took these pictures with an iPad. They are horrific, but it isn't my fault. I blame apple.... just sayin.)

This is Nanny waiving the white flag.

 Me being a stink pot.

Emma loved it when Cosmo came down with Emily and the kids. She chased Cosmo all around. One morning Emily walked Cosmo on a leash around the house after Emma. Emma thought she was being chased and just giggled up a storm. It was adorable.

We also went in the hot tub and Emma was in heaven. The next day she ran out to the pool and banged on the fence and asked to go in. Another day she saw her swim suit and she wanted to put it on. Emma would walk around the seat and occasionally try to walk into the middle and swallow some water.

I also got to take a cooking class with my dad on Indian food. It was fun. I learned that the chef's industry is quite rigid. I don't think I am that rigid, and as far as rigid goes, I am definitely up there! We made some chicken bryani, tomato chutney, a vegetable korma, mulligatawny soup, and a mango lassi. I am excited to make it for Aaron. Emma liked the leftovers. On another note I feed Emma fire hot Cheetos and she actually wanted more. She didn't even seem phased by them. I don't think I need to worry about spicy food with her. My dad said they tasted like a corroded battery terminal except crunchy.

In all Emma and I had a great time visiting with family and were especially delighted to spend some time with Nanny.

Finger Painting - With Paint This Time

I thought I would introduce Emma to finger painting (not that she isn't familiar with it, but this time with paint and not poop). The concept was a bit odd for her at first. She was looking at me like I was nuts as I laid out paint in bowls and paper on the ground. To be honest, I thought I was nuts for allowing a not-quite-two-year-old near paint in a non fenced in area of my home. Apparently I was not sane enough to stop myself.

After I showed her what to do she got excited and just squealed with delight as she painted on the paper. And then, in a moment it hit her what was happening - her hands were dirty!!! Oh the horror! So periodically I would wipe her hands off and sanity was restored (for her at least) and she would continue to paint again.

Finally, when we were done, we got to clean up. It is debatable what Emma liked more - the painting or the cleaning.

In the end, no one got hurt and my house survived. After lunch Emma asked to paint again. She wouldn't let it go, so while she was napping I hid her pictures so hopefully she would forget. I am that mean of a mom.

Hot Stuff and Independence

Apparently Emma likes hot stuff. She noticed that Aaron was putting red pepper flakes on his food and she wanted some. Finally we gave in and gave some to her. She didn't flinch, cry or anything. In fact, she asked for more and more. She ate quite a few of them and loved them. We were the ones to cut her off.

Emma is quite convinced that she is big. She wants to everything herself except for a few things. The biggest issue comes when her sippy cup falls over on her tray. It is then that her arms become broken and she wants me to pick it up for her. I got into a contest of wills with her over who was going to pick up the sippy cup. I would like to say that for once, I won. This probably won't happen again and so I would just like it to be recorded somewhere.

Family and The Children's Museum

We had Rex, Mindy, Braxton, Marissa and Grandpa Russell come to visit us this past weekend. We had a great time with them. Emma loved having cousins to play with. She would hug and kiss an pat Marissa and also check to see if Marissa had a dirty diaper. On Saturday we went to the Houston's Children's Museum. We had a great time and it is hard to say who had more fun - Aaron or Emma. Emma loved the phones and chatted on them and pushed the buttons for about 20 minutes.
Outside they had baby chicks that were hatching, a fish pond, books on dookie, and a water splash area. Emma enjoyed playing in the water and got soaked. Fortunately Aaron remembered to bring extra cloths for her.
In the basement they had a place called the Invention Convention. Aaron and I instantly fell in love with this place. In fact, I wouldn't mind going back there for a date. There was a station for making paper rockets and firing them off. There was a launching pad for paper airplanes. There was a station for using various items as musical instruments. That is what Emma is playing with here:
There is also a station for playing with Legos and using them to build a car and race it down some tracks. You will notice a large wet spot on Aaron. It is from Emma and the water park. Just thought I would put that one to rest before hand. You will also notice the intense look on both of their faces - that pretty much sums it up.
Emma loved destroying Aaron's Lego man. Destruction brings great joy and contentment to Emma's heart.

In all, we had a great time with family - we went swimming and played games and enjoyed chatting.
