Potty Training Part II

Sure enough after I wrote about the progress John was making, he had a couple of set backs. The problem wasn't so much the set backs as it was the apathy about the set backs that bothered me. I had tapered on the treats in hopes that we could progress forward into normal life. Apparently I tapered too quickly. Now we are back to lots of treats and doing better. In fact, I have come to appreciate, admire and fear John's negotiation skills.

We were at a friends house yesterday and I took him potty so we didn't have any accidents. He didn't want to go potty so I told him I had a treat for him in my backpack. He asked what I had for a poop treat in the backpack. When I told him that I didn't have anything but we could get a treat when we got home. He looked at me and the look on his face said, "Nope, not going to cut it!" Sure enough as soon as we got home, he pooped! He wants Lindt chocolate truffles, a pirate hook, sword, and dubloons. I have been wondering how much this potty training thing is going to cost me. He pretty much has eaten more candy in the last week than in the previous 3 years of his life (maybe with the exception of Aunt Mary visits).

Potty Training

After potty training Emma, I decided that I wouldn't potty train John unless he specifically asked to be potty trained. Unfortunately, he wasn't motivated to potty train before preschool was going to start. I have 7 weeks (about) until preschool starts for him and he has to be potty trained. So after much agonizing, Aaron and I decided to try potty training and see if John was open to it.

I should start off that it has gone much better than I thought it would. John has actually told me he doesn't want to use the toilet and wants to keep wearing diapers. So I was expecting weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth. There was some sadness over leaving diapers behind and some tears over it being hard to do, but I think we are making good progress. And as I write this I am hoping that I am not cursing myself and hopefully we don't have regression. John had concerns about being in the bathroom alone, the water splashing up on him, but over the course of the weekend, he has admirably progressed to get more on board with the idea of being committed to using the potty and not diapers. He isn't totally committed to stopping what he is doing and using the potty. Hopefully we get there before preschool. He has figured out that if he wants candy to eat, then if he just has to pee in the toilet to get some. I am totally ok with this. It means that I have a little more time before I have to worry about cleaning up an accident. Overall, he has been doing great. We have been blessed for sure!

John Lately

Here are some interactions with the kids that I have been meaning to write down.

1. John asked me to tell him a bedtime story. I asked him if he would tell me a bedtime story. He said he didn't have a story in his head. I asked why not and he told me that all of the words have left his head.

2. There have been a variety of times when I have asked John what he wanted for lunch/dinner, etc. He tells me he isn't hungry because he just ate ice cream. I tell him that was last week.

3. I bought a book with a million lift-the-flaps and various other "interactive" type things about various vehicles. John was looking at it during a baptism and he pointed to a vehicle and asked me what it was. I read the description to him - a pooper scooper scooter from France. He was instantly in love. This is best described as a moped with a vacuum on the back of it. Apparently someone drives around vacuuming up dog poop. Ever since then he will periodically tell me that he wants to go to France.

One day he asked me what he could get as a treat for going poops in the toilet. At this point in the game I would give him anything in the world to get this kid potty trained because he is totally unmotivated. I asked him what he wanted. A pooper scooper scooter. My dad, Mary, and I scoured the internet for one. No such luck. Apparently there aren't enough kids in France that idolize pooper scooper scooters to make toy models of them. Surely there is an untapped market here.

4. John has been loving to dress up lately as a pirate, a cowboy, or Spiderman. I have been accompanied by these characters to the grocery store on a number of occasions.

5. John told me he wants to be a gorilla keeper when he grows up.

6. John told me Cheetos can run faster than cars.

7. John didn't want me to change his bum when he had a poopy diaper. I asked him why. He told me, "I don't like cold wipes! And then my bum will be a penguin home!" He knows penguins live in cold places, so if somewhere is cold, then it must be a place where penguins live. I also sprayed sun screen on him and he told me that his arm was going to be a penguin home.

8. For a while John would say, "I am very persific about officinal stuff."

9. John walked into the room where I was and asked me if stink bugs spray toilet water at you. I told him no but he didn't believe me.

Lost and Chuy's Dip

Emma and I were in the kitchen and I heard the ice cream truck drive by our house.

Emma: I know what truck that is.
Me: Oh, what truck is it? [We have never talked about it being an ice cream truck so I was curious to see if she knew what it was.]
Emma: A van with speakers on top.
Me: Oh.
Emma: They get lost a lot because they drive through our neighborhood a lot. They drive through all the neighborhoods a lot. They get lost a lot. They never stop to look at a map.

So that answers the question, nope, she doesn't know what the ice cream truck is.

There is a restaurant here that is called Chuy's. We love their creamy jalapeno dip. We use it for fish tacos. It is pretty spicy but it is so good that even our kids will eat it. Today we look over and John is drinking it from a bowl that was intended for him to use to dip chips in. Pretty sure there is a good deal of mayonnaise in it.

Cowboy Armpits

John was supposed to be washing his hands in the bathroom and was taking a long time and was pretty quiet so Emma and I started discussing what was probably going on in there. Emma said, "I wonder what that cowboy is doing in there." I silently giggled.

Another time, Aaron was getting ready to walk out the door one night and he gave John a kiss and then walked away. John raised his arm high in the air and said, "Dad, kiss my arm pity!" Aaron promptly did.

Grandios

John found Aaron's measuring tape on the drier and wanted to measure my weight. I told him he weighs about 30 pounds and Emma weighs about 40 pounds. They asked about Aaron's and I told them how much he weighs. Emma asked me if I knew who weighed the most in the world. I told her I didn't know. Then thinking I didn't understand the question, I asked if she meant in our family. She sighed an exasperated sigh and said, "no, in the whole world." I told her I had no idea, to which she responded, "yes you do!" Like any good mom acting like a two year old, I responded, "no I don't." She countered with, "yes you do!! Heavenly Father!" I confess I instantly pictured Jabba the Hut and said, "I don't think Heavenly Father weighs the most in the world." To which she countered, "Yes he does!" I gave up at that point.

I was relating the story to Aaron and he laughed and then very seriously asked, "I wonder if the heavens preemptively laugh because they know that is coming or if they wait to laugh?" That made the rest of my day. Only Aaron could turn this story into a philosophical discussion.

Cute Pig

I brought home a book called "Mercy Watson to the Rescue." It is about a family that has a pig instead of a kid. The parents need help because their bed is falling through the floor and the pig goes off in search of food. Long story short, the pig gets into trouble and that ultimately leads to the parents getting help accidentally. The parents attribute the help to the pig (incorrectly). They call the pig a "porcine wonder."

A few days later in the middle of no where John looks up and says, "I am a porcine wonder!"

Today John asked me what adorable means so I told him that it means "very cute." He looked at me and said, "I am adorable."
